Sheryl Kristie Chan decided to learn calligraphy when she was about to get married. You see this quite frequently from the more creatively inclined brides that we work with at A Savvy Event and let's just start by saying it is no easy task to take on while planning a wedding. Sheryl, however, found calligraphy practice to be therapeutic- often using it as a way to de-stress throughout the wedding planning process. Eventually, she became so good at it that she realized she needed a way to incorporate it into her life after her wedding, so she founded Blush Type Design. It started with an Instagram to hold herself accountable, and soon turned into much, much more. We sat down with Sheryl, whom we love working with, and picked her brain about what she does as a professional calligrapher and designer.
Tell us a little bit about what you do.
My job is pretty awesome. I get to be creative everyday and whatever I dream up in my head – I can turn it into a physical thing. My main gig is doing calligraphy and signage for weddings. Everything from custom invitations and handwritten agate place cards, to large acrylic seating charts and personalized wooden quote boards – I do it all! When I explained my job to someone they described it as all the Pinterest things that people pin when they want to make their wedding more personal and pretty! That’s exactly what I do! I also enjoy teaching people what I do and try to host workshops on a regular basis so I can share what I love with others!
If you had to pick just one of the services you offer, which would be your favorite?
This one is tough! I do really like teaching though! I offer classes on a regular basis and also do private classes as well. It’s really great to be able to share your craft with other people. There are so many things I wish I knew at the beginning and I just want to help people along the way. It’s amazing to see people’s progress from when they start the class to the end. At the end of the class they have a new skill they can take away them and use as their own therapeutic “me” time.
How do you balance your own artistic style and the needs of your clients?
For the most part, people hire me because they like my style! I’ve been very fortunate to not have to go too far outside of my box for many clients. That being said, I’m very flexible and willing to challenge myself and try new things! I love when clients challenge me and bring new ideas to me. It’s all part of the creative process, working together to push boundaries and circle back at the end with an end product that both parties are happy with!
What is your favorite part about working with brides?
Their faces when they see everything on the day! It’s so great to work with brides throughout the whole process and help them bring their creative vision to life. It’s one of my favorite things, to listen to a bride talk about her vision for the whole thing and then take that and create something magical that fits their exact theme and style to a tee. It’s very beautiful thing to be part of the magic of one of the greatest days of someone’s life.
