Like all great businesses, West Wine Tours began when Garrett's wife Nicole had a brilliant idea- to do Sonoma wine tours in vintage VW buses. Inspired by passing a VW bus on a Sonoma road, Garrett loved the idea of taking a traditional wine tour and turning it on its head for a fresh experience. Now, Garrett spends his days running West Wine Tours, and driving tours in what he calls one of the most beautiful places in the world- Sonoma Valley.
As the idea developed, Garrett's entrepreneurial spirit and desire to travel off the beaten path shone through in the West Wine Tours experience. He loves working with wineries that are also doing unique things with their customers. The current fleet consists of three gorgeously restored and styled VW vans. First, a 69’ they call “Green Bean”, a 71’ that had an identity crisis and was “Puffin” turned “Mojito” then “Janet” now “Olive”, and the last is Sweet Pea which is a 79’ and the poster child of West Wine tours. Garrett says she’s like Rudolph but no one was ever mean to her. She’s just the favorite.
Although Garrett wouldn't divulge what his current favorite winery is (we get it, that's a loaded question) he did give a nod to Sixteen 600 winery in Sonoma, Liana Estates in Carneros, and Ideology Winery in Napa as a few of the places he has close relationships with and are frequently on his pre-set route. You can book his curated experience through Air BnB, or his website, but Garrett says he'll drive just about anywhere you want to go if you book all six seats on the bus.
Garrett is not shy to adventure, as you might have already picked up on, and recently got ordained in order to do elopements and weddings! He also cooks every meal for West Wine Tours from scratch with seasonally available ingredients- as if it couldn't get any better, right? West Wine Tours and their small fleet of VW's are certainly on our bucket list for 2018 experiences in Sonoma Valley!
