St. Francis Winery is tucked in between Kenwood and Santa Rosa, CA in the upper Sonoma Valley. Between their luscious, fruit driven wines, their Zagat recommended wine and food pairing, and some of the most stunning views in Sonoma County, St. Francis Winery is a great place to experience wine country at its finest. Additionally, the winery hosts private events, weddings, wine club dinners, but also (in the summer months) a Stars Under the Stars Outdoor Film Festival!
Each movie-night event begins at 7:00 PM with live music, free popcorn, and of course wine to purchase by the glass or bottle. The wine-making team pairs each movie with appropriate wines, and you can bring a blanket and a picnic to go along with your wine of choice.
We attended their showing of Grease, which was preceded by a performance by Wine Country Jazz. As we sipped on some 2016 Sauvignon Blanc from St. Francis's Bennett Valley Dry Stack Vineyard and waited for the sun to set, the lawn quickly filled up with blankets, picnic tables, chairs, and families buzzing with excitement. We were astonished at how many people came from all over the valley to enjoy the movie night, some even dressing up as characters from the classic musical.
In addition to selling wine, visitors were able to purchase food from El Coyote food truck, a local cobbler bakery, and a taiwanese inspired shaved ice vendor. We brought snacks with us but couldn't resist a taco or two from one of our favorite food trucks in Sonoma, and enjoyed our picnic as we waited for the movie to start.
I will say that if I had any advice to you if you plan on attending one of these events it would be to dress warmly, and to bring extra blankets! Even on a hot day (I believe it was in the high 90's on the Thursday we attended) it got cold and slightly breezy as soon as the sun sunk down behind the hills. Additionally, I would also caution parents with small children, or an early Friday morning schedule, that the movie didn't begin until around 9:00 PM.
We had a great time singing along to Grease classics with the entire crowd and would definitely recommend the movie nights at St. Francis Winery as an awesome summertime activity. There are two more showings you can catch this summer on Thursday, July 20th- Some Like It Hot, and Thursday, July 27th- Good Will Hunting. Don't miss out on one of the most unique winery events of the summer!
