An Interview with Cara Underwood of Underwood Letterpress

Underwood Letterpress all began in 2005 with a leap of faith.

Owner and founder Cara Underwood was originally working in public policy, but after learning to letterpress print while studying bookmaking she knew there was no turning back. And so, Underwood Letterpress was born. Starting as a boutique letterpress studio focused on custom work, it has evolved over the years into a stationary brand specializing in greeting cards, gift items, and custom work available across the country and internationally.

We sat down with Cara to pick her brain on what makes Underwood Letterpress the fabulous company that it is toady.

Tell us a little bit about how you work with couples to create a customized invitation suite for their wedding day?

"We absolutely love working alongside couples to create wedding invitations that are truly special and a reflection of their own personalities. Our clients often get involved in the design phase - sharing ideas or even personal artwork that we find ways to incorporate. We love working with texture and color and pay extra attention to the experience of an invitation — from the postage on the outside of an envelope all the way to the smallest finishing detail, we really appreciate the tactile experience that can be achieved. We see each invitation as a piece of art and like to create something that not only feels special in your hands, but tells a story about the bride and groom."

Outside of the wedding industry, what type of custom work does Underwood Letterpress do?

"We work with a number of designers, startups and firms to create really unique business cards and other branding collateral. We are always building our greeting card and gift line and are excited to release new greeting card designs, notepads and journals this spring."

What is your favorite part about your work?

"I feel privileged everyday to get to work with my hands. A typical day involves moving between my laptop as I perfect designs or communicate with clients, and getting messy on the press with an apron on and ink all over my hands! In an increasingly digital world, it feels really nice to have some analog in my life. I also really love the people and clients who make up the wedding industry. My colleagues are so professional and are truly in the business to help couples create lasting memories full of love, laughter, good vibes and beautiful details on their wedding day. I have made some great friends along the way and love making new ones."

What can we expect from Underwood Letterpress in 2017?

"We are celebrating the start of our third year in the Bay Area after having established the business in Los Angeles. We built a strong foundation in L.A., but are now loving all of our new relationships in San Francisco and have had the opportunity to work on some fantastic projects with our northern California clients. We also welcomed a brand new press to our studio who we call Rose! We love having visitors to our South San Francisco studio so never hesitate to contact us. Rose would love to meet you!"
